Special Needs Children and Adults Succeed Through Special Olympics

Posted by Paula Schmitt on

Special needs children and adults have a tough road. With many roadblocks in their path, special needs children and adults have to navigate life in an entirely different way than we do. They must overcome challenges that aren't even on our radars. That's why the Special Olympics is so important. Through the Special Olympics, those with special needs can develop a sense of mastery over themselves and their world by participating in sports in an environment that keeps them feeling safe and valued.

Helping Special Needs Children and Adults for Five Decades

The Special Olympics has been helping people with special needs find their confidence since 1968. Since that time, the organization's goal has been to help those with intellectual disabilities find their power by discovering new strengths, abilities, and skills via sports. These lessons help them succeed both on and off the field.

The Special Olympics strives to reach all of the 200 million people with intellectual disabilities around the world through its programs consisting of training, competitions, health screenings, and fundraising events. In addition, it helps create opportunities for families, community members, local leaders, businesses, law enforcement, celebrities, dignitaries, and others in places of influence to come together to promote a change in attitude towards special needs children and adults and support the athletics that help them succeed.

A Global Event

To further their cause, the Special Olympics hosts world games just as their namesake, The Olympics, does. These games bring together teams from around the world to compete in a variety of sports to hone their skills and improve their sense of self-worth and mastery over themselves and the world around them.

This year, the games are being held in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Over 7,000 athletes from 170 countries will come together to compete in 24 summer sports. In addition, 2,500 coaches and 20,000 volunteers will be there to help make it all happen and support the Special Olympics cause.
